Chennai to Sripuram Golden Temple

Chennai is the most common starting point for visitors flying in or travelling by rail. Sripuram works as a long day trip or an overnight stay.

Overview

Chennai Central to Sripuram is about 145 to 150 km by road; from Chennai International Airport it is about 135 km by road. Chennai has the nearest major international airport and the main railway terminus for the region.

By road

Take NH48, the Chennai–Bengaluru highway, west to Vellore, then follow signs to Sripuram on the south side of the town. The highway is a multi-lane expressway for most of the route.

Independent planning estimate

Allow 3 to 4 hours each way from central Chennai, depending on traffic. An early start gives you more margin.

Not an official temple estimate.

By train

Trains from Chennai Central towards Bengaluru, Jolarpettai and beyond stop at Katpadi Junction, the station for Vellore. Express trains are the fastest way to cover most of the distance. Continue from Katpadi by taxi, auto or bus; see Katpadi to Sripuram.

Check current trains on the Indian Railways enquiry system. Reserved seats on morning trains can sell out on weekends and before festivals.

By bus

Government and private buses run frequently from Chennai to Vellore, arriving at the Vellore New Bus Stand, about 12 km by road from Sripuram. Government services can be reserved on the TNSTC website.

Doing it as a day trip

A same-day return is possible but long. Darshan runs 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, daily.

  1. Leave Chennai early to reach Sripuram mid-morning.
  2. Allow several hours at the temple rather than a fixed time; the Annadhana Mandapam serves meals from 12 noon to 3:00 PM.
  3. Leave by mid-afternoon to reach Chennai in the evening, or stay for the evening and return late.

Independent planning guidance

If you want to see Vellore Fort as well, or see the temple after dark without a late drive back, an overnight stay in Vellore makes the day far less rushed. See Sripuram and Vellore in a day and accommodation.

The return journey

City traffic on the way back into Chennai can add time to the drive, so do not plan a tight connection. If returning by train, check the last convenient train from Katpadi before you set out, and work back from it.
