Thirumalaikodi and Vellore

Sripuram is at Thirumalaikodi (also called Malaikodi), a village near Vellore in northern Tamil Nadu. The Peedam describes the village as surrounded by hills, with its institution at the edge of a hill it calls Kailasha Giri, and notes that Thirumalaikodi is roughly equidistant from the pilgrimage towns of Tirupati and Tiruvannamalai.

Sri Narayani Peedam

The temple was built by, and is administered by, Sri Narayani Peedam, formally the Om Sakthi Narayani Siddar Peedam Charitable Trust. According to its official website, Sri Sakthi Amma established the trust in 1992 as a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation. It describes charitable programmes in education, healthcare camps, food distribution, women's welfare, environmental work, cow protection, rural water supply, tribal welfare and temple restoration.

Religious belief Followers revere Sri Sakthi Amma as an embodiment of the goddess Narayani. The Peedam's account describes a divine revelation at about the age of sixteen as the beginning of this spiritual role. This is a matter of religious belief, recorded here as the Peedam describes it.

According to the Peedam's website, Sri Sakthi Amma conducts a daily pooja at Sri Narayani Peedam, followed by darshan for devotees.

Development of Sripuram

The Peedam's website attributes the design of the whole temple to Sri Sakthi Amma, and describes the project as intended for people of every race, religion, caste or creed. The temple was planned as the centre of a larger landscape: about 100 acres of landscaped grounds, a star-shaped path with twelve vertices, and an eco-pond, the Sarvatheertham, which the Peedam says was filled with water from the major rivers of India.

The Vellore District Government also gives the campus as 100 acres.

Construction of the Golden Temple

Neither the official website nor the Vellore District Government publishes a construction start date, construction period, number of artisans or construction cost. Published accounts elsewhere give different figures for the project's cost, so this guide does not treat any single figure as definitive.

Gold craftsmanship

The Vellore District Government describes the temple as covered with approximately 1,500 kg of gold. It says every detail was made by hand, from converting gold bars into foil to mounting 9 to 10 layers of foil on etched copper plates, by artisans who specialise in temple art.

The Peedam's website gives the quantity as "over 1.5 tonnes" and the number of layers as "nine to fifteen" on one page and "15" on another. Published figures for the layers therefore range from 9 to 15.
